Pixilated Puffin Design is a fiber art studio, dealing exclusively in the original designs of Valentine Bachmann of Lunenburg County Nova Scotia.

Our Designer
Valentine lives in an old farm house,in Hebbville, near Bridgewater, Lunenburg Co. Nova Scotia with her design staff of three dogs and two cats and her husband, the webmaster.
Val taught school for many years across Canada, all the while following her love for painting and sewing. She has had her work in a number of Juried Shows in BC, NB, SK, AB and NS as well as a number of one person shows. Val took workshops from Alice Reid, Joe Fitzpatrick, Tony Law, Ruth Wainwright, Graham Pilsworth as well as NSCAD evening courses.
After retiring from teaching (biology, ecology, english and art), she started to sew and smock in earnest, building on the training she had received from Ellen Henderson the children's fine dress designer in Toronto.

While living in Minnesota in Gibbon without a work permit Val dove straight into quilting, taking full advantage of the Mid West quilting expertise in the area.
On returning to Canada she lived in Halifax for a year then moved to Petite Riviere where she met Doris Eaton who introduced her to the ladies of the Rug Hooking Guild -- she took up this hobby and turned it into her own art form.
She has been showing her fibre art pieces in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick for the last 6 years.
Lately Val has developed a business in designing and building one-of-a-kind handbags.

The PUFFIN BAG

The Puffin Bag was designed at first to decorate the simulated cliff in my Trade Booth. Puffin Fans have discovered them lately at my Retail Shows, so they are beginning to disappear! Actually a zippered and padded crescent bag, 11” long x 6.5” high with a strap, the Puffin Bag is folded up into a fat little bird shape, now 9” long x 7” high and is carried on your wrist. The outside of the bag is made from fine woven cottons, with extra texture on the beak area. The bow of black silk or extra fine black cotton, is trimmed by black net, so that the eye is not obscured by the bow. Inside, the bag is lined with a cotton print fabric, with one pocket. Our puffin bags retail for $75.00 US and can be ordered by email from this site.

And the Puffins other Friends

Wool Applique "Squirrel & Pine Cone"

Hooking "Trumpeters Swansong"

The squirrel piece is part of a set.. The image is built up from scraps of wool fabrics, hand stitched to the wool backing. Other animals in the series were a baby raccoon, a pair of blue jays, field mice, a chipmunk, and an owl. These are all frequent visitors in our country yard. The “Porcupine Cherry Thief” was designed to console a friend about the death of her one remaining cherry tree. After dining on the cherries, the porcupine had then gnawed off the tree’s bark as dessert, thus killing the tree. The porcupine’s quills are made from strips of wool with embroidery over the top. The whole image was created from wool scraps, hand stitched to the wool backing.
